Celebrating our First Nations connections: A new artwork commission by Emrhan Tjapanangka Sultan
Emrhan is from the Western Arrarnta and Luritja people in Central Australia, and Kokatha people of South Australia. He is deeply connected to his cultural values and from an early age, was taught and given permission by his Elders to paint in the traditional style of the Western and Central Desert.
Emrhan’s beautiful artwork is much more than a visual piece—it symbolises our ongoing commitment to working with First Nations communities and reflects the relationships we foster within and outside of our organisation with both First Nations and non-Indigenous clients. Key elements within the artwork represent our staff, the places where we gather, and the journey we are on together as an organisation.
Each part tells a distinct story that is connected to the whole, mirroring how individuals play an important role in supporting connection and cohesion across relationships, families and communities.
‘RAV has been dedicated to fostering meaningful connections and creating positive change across communities in Victoria. Their work has had a significant impact, especially in building strong, respectful, and enduring partnerships with First Nations people.
‘This design is a celebration of the deep relationships RAV has nurtured with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, reflected in the ‘U’ shapes that represent people — honouring the resilience, wisdom, and cultural strength of First Nations peoples.
‘It acknowledges the importance of past relationships; the value of present connections that are reflected in the circles expanding like a ripple effect; and the commitment to future collaborations that support reconciliation, healing, and shared growth which are reflected by each dot. Through this design, we pay tribute to RAV’s ongoing dedication to respect, understanding, and cultural integrity, and recognise the vital role these relationships play in strengthening communities for generations to come.’

This commission aligns with our Strategic Plan 2024–26, which highlights our commitment to working to developing our understanding, trust and relationships with First Nations peoples and communities. It’s also one of many actions in our work towards ongoing learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, celebrating the achievements and contributions of First Nations peoples, and providing support as requested.
This striking artwork is a meaningful representation of our organisation, our values and our continued efforts to respect the traditions and contributions of First Nations peoples, and we thank Emrhan for working with us to create this piece.
