Man Up: Creating Respectful Relationships program

Article

We’re excited to announce that Relationships Australia Victoria is involved in a new respectful relationships program partnership led by Melbourne City Football Club and its charitable arm City in the Community.

The ‘Man Up! Creating Respectful Relationships’ program is funded by the Australian Government and uses football as a vehicle to support respectful relationships between young people across south-east Melbourne. It is designed to encourage broader gender inclusion and equality, improve mental health, and ultimately contribute to creating safer communities.

We attended the Melbourne City Football Club’s well-attended official launch of the program at Lyndhurst Secondary School on Thursday 25 August, joining with students, staff, project partners, local parliamentarians and community stakeholders.

In addition to delivering a broad range of professional development offerings, including graduate diplomas, workshops and webinars, our Training and Development team undertakes a range of projects and funded partnerships with government departments, organisations and agencies.

We look forward to working with the other project partners, which include Coaches Across Continents and expert Sport for Development Researcher and Academic Dr Pam Kappelides, to develop research and evidence-led program content on the following topics:

  • What a healthy and unhealthy relationship might look like with different people and in different places
  • Unpacking how people react and behave in challenging situations
  • Building resilience and coping strategies
  • Awareness of mental health issues
  • Being a leader for other people
  • Gender equality and exploring expectations on gender roles

We will also provide a Train the Trainer program to City in the Community young leaders, who will co-design and deliver the respectful relationships program to secondary school students and local football clubs across the south-east of Melbourne.

‘Working with our partners, we will take a research and evidence-led approach to developing a program that supports young people and leaders to identify and form healthy and respectful relationships in all facets of their lives,' said Donna Plavljanic, Senior Manager Training and Development.
